Congratulations

I have raised my glass on many occasions:

in the name of friendship
to salute an old lover
or just because someone 
is wiping up the bar
and I’ve uttered many words
as the glass comes up
like:
here’s to the ghosts
or once more Delilah!

but wouldn’t it be better to salute something more deserving
migrating birds, for instance
or the pack of cards on the window ledge
or the bastard son of justice

if we cannot tip our fool’s mug at anything other than ourselves -
something worthy, less human -
then let us not lift
anything at all.
