interwoven roots
every stream will slip past
that old oak, dark as time,
with the strength of ages
in its questing roots
and for every question
bubbling up in the slipstream
of seeking water
a thousand answers twist and interweave
as they jostle to reply,
a thousand roots reach down
into the ancient earth
cause and effect is lost
within the tangle of growth
reason and meaning cannot be separated
from dirt and scrub -
time will bury everything
as yesterday is pushed deeper
into the past
