To Matthew Shugart's next piece

the only two feared men

everyone watches the bee
who flew in through the open window

it's a cold october
he knows that he will die soon
those of us sitting here
        who aren't gone already
know we are not far behind

some of the girls get scared and cry out
from the fear
of being stung

while I'm writing this
the teacher is in front
trying to combine the bee's presence
with her lecture on european folktales

everyone falls for it but me
they all laugh and think it is a very humorous comparison
        even the girls who cried out in fear
everyone believes that things are back to normal
it's the common and necessary acceptance

and shortly after everything continues
someone crushes the bee with a heavy book

        leaving only one of us
