On Discovering My Dead Body
Someone has pulled me from the river
And left me lying face down on the banks
A crowd gathers
They wonder if I am dead
Perhaps I am a drowning victim
That has been saved and is now resting
They roll me over and see that my face
Has been destroyed and only
My eyes remain.
I watch them, listen as they decide my fate
Maybe we should throw her back
Or take her with us.
Maybe we should just leave her. I turn
And stare at the old man that suggests it.
The crowd is quiet, then slowly they nod
In agreement. No! my voiceless body cries
But they don't hear me and I feel them
Moving the earth as they walk
Towards each other
Away from me
