Two Poems by Ivan Jenson

Look and Listen

hey did you see that?
did you hear it too?
or was it all in my head?
for me
for a moment
it looked just like an
impressionist painting
and it sounded like
ambient
alchemy
but no
you just don't get it
you have never
really looked
and listened
as intently
as I do
nor do you read
into moments
as deeply
you're lucky
you skim
like a tossed
pebble
and then you sink
into yourself
like a dark lake
and I fish
for your
compliments
but only end up
catching a cold

The one to know

you ask a lot of questions
anybody ever tell you that?
you're pushy
but in a good way
you have an edge
but don't
go over it
you have gumption
I'll give you that much
you certainly know
what you want
but maybe not
how to get it
you reach for stars
and often only
grab thin air
you have not made
it to the top
but at least you are
the center
of attention
I applaud you
and yet
long for your
intermission
I heard
people
talking about you
before I met you
now I am
talking
behind your back
loud enough
for you to hear
and maybe
notice me
but you
don't do that
hell,
other people
have never been
your thing
