When we talk about politics the first object is to note whether we agree with our interlocutors or not. Only after noting whether agreement exists can we form a coalition, attempt to convince our opponent that he is wrong, or throw up hands our in confusion (or despair).
§§§§
I do not want to suggest that it's bad to speak as if we were the president, congress, ruler of the world, etc. For it is only by using this as if that we are able to empathize, tell stories, and to truly think politically. Being able to listen to each other, to understand one another, and to agree (or disagree) with each other is at the heart of knowing that other people have minds (the root of the solution to the other minds problem) and thus at the heart of acting ethically toward our fellow human beings and it depends essentially on this as if.
