Census

Having had time
to witness one whole life
and dramatic parts of others
from inside these eyes,
I see the difficulty
of becoming the person
we wanted to be:
one a dancer
who no longer dances,
one a painter
who now writes,
one an actor
now on the road,
two self-ended,
six lovers
now divorced,
one a god
in a full-security condo
who refuses to see
any of her followers,
and only two
still really married
to the one began with.
