the child who died of love

Belvik and Telvik were wise in the knowledge of ancestral wounds. They were rich in the oil of loathing. Between them they had a child, from whom they each demanded love, which the child gave willingly, as children do. But they each beat the child when it showed love for the other. The child could not stop loving, so it died. At the grave, they each laid down flowers, and destroyed the other’s flowers. One day, they arrived at the grave at the same time, and snarled at each other and fell upon the tombstone, kicking and tearing at it until it crumpled. Dust and grit and petals scattered.
