Echoes of Madness

I'll drink one last toast to the living,
It's quite an achievement today,
And hope that the Lord is forgiving,
For otherwise mankind will pay;

Pay for defiling the water,
Pay for polluting the air,
For leading poor nations to slaughter,
Then easing his conscience with prayer;

For laughing while children are crying
From hunger and sickness and cold,
For cheating and grasping and lying
To increase his holdings in gold;

For condemning millions to sadness,
Poverty, anguish and pain,
Caused by wars that are echoes of madness
Of a world that is going insane.
