First Day of Autumn
If today is the first day of autumn
Yesterday must have been
The last day of summer
I spent it unwisely
(so with most of my days)
I own nothing that I can keep
On this minor milestone
I take the time to examine my motives
Nothing can justify
This enormous waste of time
The average American sees the seasons change
304 times
If any of these seasons contained
Something of value
Would that make it worthwhile?
If today is the first day of the rest of my life
Yesterday must have been
The last day of my memories
I am not impressed by
That which I leave behind
These things can do nothing for me
