Snowball
A Child's First Experience with Death

"It's cruel to put my kitten out
On such a snowy night!"
"Don't worry," I was reassured,
"Snowball will be all right."
When morning came it was so cold
That I could see my breath;
I opened the rear door and saw
Poor Snowball froze to death.
Her glassy eyes were fixed upon
The newly opened door,
And after that I never trusted
Adults any more.
