Sybil: Aged 3 She has made it to the woods; she has pushed her fingers into channeled bark and felt the heart beat of a tree. She has lain down in a field of mice and let them plait her hair and let them nibble straight her fingernails. She has gone into a house and eaten shrimp and plovers' eggs and sat upon a golden throne and worn a dress of watered silk. She has danced across a marbled floor and been caressed by caring hands and been raised up into the air . . . and she has flown away. Her other self is still below: a button-hook between her legs.
