the blue eyes that watched me as a child
looking at me now, pleading, helpless
I don’t want to die
I know, I don’t want you to

listening to the doctor explain
quality of life
systems shutting down
matter of time

what would you do?
blue eyes searching, frightened
if I could change places
i would sign the order

a child should not take hope
from their father
to pronounce death
to seal the eyes that loved you
