When Chris Gilliland first sent work to Unlikely Stories, he said that the primary appeal of his short fiction and narrative nonfiction was its ability to humiliate him. These stories are indeed loaded with self-mockery, but are universal enough that they help us mock ourselves a little, as well. You'll feel very comfortable with the frustrations and neuroses of his characters, as they desperately try to make their way through a world they just barely understand.
