How To Rest
This is what you learned in school: that a body
in motion tends to remain
in motion.
When you are still enough and absolutely quiet
there is still the dull mutter
of blood
moving beneath your skin, the whine
of nerves against wine-dark
bone
and no matter if you close your eyes
you’ll never stop dreaming
long enough
to remember when it stopped
or if it did.
