Metamorphosis A little catepillar fed upon a milkweed leaf, And watched the lovely butterflies in flight; And as she looked she languished in despondency and grief As she compared them with her lowly plight. She sadly stopped her eating and she shed her larval skin; Then lay in a chrysalis in deep sleep. In time she turned transparent, and struggling within, She cracked the wall her destiny to keep. Then weak and limp she rested, fluttering her fragile wings, While birds looked down in disbelief on high. She went from hell to heaven and she tasted wonderous things As she spread her golden wings up in the sky.
