Nine Paintings, August 2020
Artist Statement
This is a series of paintings that explore art as a form of divination or truth seeking. The goal is to discover a unique truth in the confluence of intuitive choices that make up each piece.
The paintings start with photos taken of anonymous strangers and other objects and settings that signify something to me. I usually don’t know what it is. The not-knowing is important. These are then woven together with other random elements into a narrative that, through surprising parallels and connections, creates a dialog of disparate elements which becomes more than the sum of its parts. The process is highly intuitive and shares attributes of I ching, tarot reading, and other forms of divination. The object is epiphany. The joy is the discovery.
