celebrating "A Brief Conversation with Consciousness" and "Flight Advice: a fabulary"
On February 2, 2022, Unlikely Books celebrated the release of A Brief Conversation with Consciousness, a book of poems by Marc Vincenz, and Flight Advice: a fabulary, a book of short stories by Tobey Hiller! Marc and Tobey read from their books, and were joined by poets Teow Lim Goh and Carol Dorf. This is the full footage from the evening's reading.
Marc Vincenz is a poet, translator, editor, fiction writer, musician and artist. He has published over 40 books of fiction, poetry and translation. His recent books are The King of Prussia is Drunk on Stars, The Mayfly Codex, Rocketship to the Andromeda Galaxy, and Three Telltale Love Signs. Forthcoming poetry collections are Ironclad (Spuyten Duyvil, 2025), Spells for the Wicked (Unlikely Books, 2025), and No More Animal Poems (White Pine, 2026). Forthcoming translations are Still Some Light in the House and Selected Prose Poems, both by Klaus Merz, and Country of Small Men by Ernst Halter, all translated from the German. Marc is also editor-publisher of MadHat Press and publisher of New American Writing.
Tobey Hiller is the author of six books: a novel, four collections of poetry, and, most recently, a book of short stories, Flight Advice: a fabulary, just out from Unlikely Books. Her poetry and flash can be found in a variety of magazines and journals, online and off. She thinks the rivers are telling us something. Tobey recommends Doctors without Borders.
Teow Lim Goh is the author of Islanders (Conundrum Press, 2016), a volume of poems on the history of Chinese exclusion at the Angel Island Immigration Station. Her work has been featured in Tin House, Catapult, PBS NewsHour, Colorado Public Radio, and The New Yorker. She lives in Denver.
Carol Dorf is a Zoeglossia fellow. Her writing has been published in three chapbooks, and in journals that include Great Weather for Media, The Mom Egg, Aybss and Apex, About Place, Slipstream, The Journal of Humanistic Mathematics, Scientific American, and Maintenant. She is the founding poetry editor of Talking Writing, and teaches math in Berkeley, California. Carol recommends Fair Fight.
