An Attempt to Liven up Purgatory

The drag show at the DMV didn’t go as planned.

Everyone had one goal in mind and that wasn’t watching Anita Man and Blue Berry prance around to music from an old school boombox. Anita flashed her long, star-studded blue acrylic nails unnoticed by those with eyes locked to cellphones at a standstill in lines. Very few applauded them, but most were very testy like anyone at the DMV. The throng waiting outside longed to be indoors in the stale air.

“Boo” blasted out from a little person who seemed like someone with small vocal chords, but this clearly wasn’t the case. Others joined in with the built-up enmity of those gaining so little ground in line. A kind of heckling frenzy broke out like the rumblings before a prison riot. The already irritated state employees behind counters could barely hear.

“Who’s in charge here?” shouted a prim-looking older woman in a shrill voice. Suddenly a Hulky man with a snake tattoo spreading down from the side of his neck stomped over to Anita and Blue, turned off the boom box in the middle of “It’s Raining Men,” a place where Anita really liked to let loose, saying, “Show’s over ladies.”

Blue turned to her partner in crime, wig now precariously askew after her hefty gyrations, and with an exhausted breath said, “Well, guess our job here is done, Anita!” as those still waiting in line took their next step towards their destination.
