A Trip to BLACKBOX, 8/21/26 - Page 2

ICYMI, Part XIII

According to 9News sources, no charges were filed after a record-setting 1.7 million fentanyl pills were discovered in an abandoned storage unit outside Douglas County, CO last November. While 20 people apparently remain in custody for an ongoing DEA investigation, the 6th largest seizure in U.S. history has yet to name any responsible parties and I truthfully don’t see that changing anytime soon…

"Conflict Resolution:" Give an example of how you handled a disagreement or conflict with a coworker.

When I first started training at my current position and took over as general manager, my first day on location I was informed that the previous GM would work alongside me and was upset about his demotion. I needed to learn the basics of my role at the particular location as sales volume was higher near the ballpark arena. I spoke with him at length about any concerns he had with staff members, maintained social decorum and approached every interaction with a calm voice/attention to detail. We were able to work alongside each other in a friendly manner and he was moved to another location with less resentment toward the company, while a previously unexpected bond was formed between us as a result.

“Let me take a picture of you.” Jill whispered over the Jungle as the night closed out with waning dancefloor attendance. I remembered the first few times we’d made out, it felt very familiar, alarming, like we had danced before; I was losing the tension from sitting at home and 2 gran mal seizures after sweat-soaked dreams earlier in  the week. I’ve been sitting on this battle with unresolved grave spinning, watching the work days slide by like soft shoes on slick footing and when I first heard about BLACKBOX’s 8/21 set featuring: KUHLIN w/ FUNKBOX, BUDGE, unsure what I would be walking into since I have lived here for a decade and never been inside, 10:30 had come so fast I was drunk on adrenaline and felt the urge to try a headslide on the dancefloor around 12am Saturday morning.

I didn’t. I didn’t attempt a double knee/single leg split like my golden years would have me believe is still possible, but surprisingly found myself in sync with her movements while 5HEADEDCOBRA was spinning out of range from an elaborately empty pool table in the back corner near the ladies room.

When you enter the BLACKBOX, you pass through a metal detector after the body wand waves you clear, and notwithstanding any vigilant security staff and a gracious ticket checker, you can take a left  at the black gates or hit up The Lounge on the right, big or small-crowded or intimate spaces are open for discussion.

"Problem Solving:" Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem at work.

While working at Walgreens one of my coworkers didn’t pay attention to the tall man lettering on a bottle of lioTHYRONine and mistakenly filled the prescription for levoTHYROXine. I noticed the mistake. I alerted my coworker to the error, corrected the rx before dispensing and alerted the pharmacist in hopes of avoiding future hazardous mistakes. My coworker paid more attention to detail as a result.

I told Jill, as an obvious veteran, I could see a designer drug crowd was flocking to The Lounge, with PETER VAUGHAN working the 1 & 2's above the guided eyes of a ninja. Security did their diligence to keep the bathroom clear of gathering crowds and made me remember my times getting hassled in the stalls of CLUB X, Louisville Kentucky circa 1997-2003. While FUNKBOX was on point next door, we talked about my days of selling ketamine at rave clubs in Memphis, Nashville, the chemical makeup of cat tranquilizers and the residual drainage that serves as a bitter annotation to the days of what I once considered an uninhibited spirit.

This was the first time I’d danced in 10 years. I was pouring sweat after an hour in the right room, Jill’s years at dance schools across the country showed through and we garnered cheers and jeers with our aligned movement to the music. On the left side were flow flaggers gathered in concentric circles while KUHLIN and company captivated a decent crowd underneath an intensely brilliant 3D display from qrm3d.  Instead of the 6 hits of LSD I recently gave away, I’d brought an emergency dose of Nayzalm, just in case I was thinking of astral projection through the fire exit.

"Teamwork:" Describe a time you worked effectively as part of a challenging team.

While working for Medix we provided at home deliveries for hospice patients that were scheduled to depart every 3 hours. I worked with 3 pharmacists and 2 techs filling prescriptions that included compounded medications like lorazepam, Diclofenac, and baclofen. I had relative experience with compounding and was sometimes called to fill transdermal prescriptions which required fast and efficient oversight, while also maintaining focus on filling other rxs in a timely manner. I had my direct supervisor oversee my compounding work while getting used to the process, before returning to my previous position. As a result, we were able to maintain our scheduled delivery times and I learned more about compounding procedures in the process.

I honestly had the deadly wrong impression our shared endorphin high had reached a fever pitch during ballet sex with dark synth playing from the office chair in my apartment some weeks prior. I continue to stand corrected and strangely adjust to interacting with people outside my social bubble as of late. The music brought the heat for a gauntlet between myself and the chariots of my inept behavior during recent months. Physicality is not something that I look for because I am used to an eventual confrontation. I was happy to leave all that at the black door behind me.

We missed BUDGE & SWAAN’s respected sets, trying to be fashionably late as Jill’s sequenced black dress was something totally worth our mistiming, but fortunate enough to see FUNKBOX and the rabble of shoegaze culture, and sober, I felt like I should’ve been on something to fully syncopate with a scene that may, for all likes and purposes, has passed me by; during pillow talk I laugh about how if I was on ‘rolls’ as my former years, I would’ve bounced from room to room, unable to focus on anyone’s turntables because I’d be so engrossed with the crowd and the lights, but being 43 and debilitated with a neurological disorder, ah fuck it, let’s not make excuses, I needed some drugs. I’m really freaked out about doing club drugs more than I was as an adolescent and that’s probably not fair for me to say considering the side effects I’ve chocked up to part of the fun in the past, but lately I’ve been hearing about xylazine being used as a cutting agent and that shit will literally melt your flesh.

Jill and I were standing outside a burrito stand, across the street from The Church (hyperlink denver nightclub) after we finally left, and there was a tall white man with blond {Locs} doubled over at the waist, picking at his legs.

“I think he’s cutting himself.” Jill observed, before placing our order with the lone cook behind the motorized stall; upon further inspection, yea, he was making sharp white lines in the dry, disheveled pockets of his left calf muscle, while a DPD patrol unit sat quietly with their caution lights blinking in the adjoining alley, enjoying the show…
